Name: Doug Year

Job description: I have been with Sunderland Brothers Co. for over 16 years. I have been there long enough to be the “old” cabinet guy at Sunderlands. I have been blessed to have many opportunities from show homes and Tour of Remodeled homes to large retirement centers. I have really come to enjoy creating solutions to my customers needs.

1. Where is your hometown?

I moved down to the warmth of Des Moines after growing up and starting a family in Sioux Falls, SD. I still enjoy the mild winters here in central Iowa.

2. Family?

I have been married to my wife Kristi for seven years. We share a blended family in Clive. We are chase twin 13 year olds across central Iowa during the week and weekends. Our older children put up with us during the holidays.

3. What do you enjoy doing when not working?

I still help doing a little coaching with my stepson’s baseball team and spend time on two wheels( bicycles and motorcycles).

4. First job?

I grew up in the family landscaping business. I didn’t realize until I was 22 that I could have a job that I didn’t have to shower after I got home from work.

5. If you could learn any skill?

My daughter has a pilot’s license, I would love to learn to fly.

6. Favorite Quote?

One I made up the first year as Chairman of the Tour of Remodeled Homes in 2010 “I didn’t know what I didn’t know until I didn’t know it”

7. One modern convenience you would not want to live without?

Rechargeable batteries, what would any of us do without them??

8. Favorite place to entertain clients or friends?

My favorite place to entertain is the back deck, grills glowing, music playing and everyone relaxing around the fire.

9. Favorite super hero?

I guess I never much thought about that, lets go with Superman.

10. Favorite creative outlet or hobby?

My go to hobby is music, my wife and I love concerts and have traveled around the Midwest to see our favorites.

11. What aspect of the remodeling industry do you enjoy the most?

I suppose I enjoy designing kitchens but to be more specific I like translating my customers dreams into rooms they love to spend time in.

12. What would you do if you weren’t in the remodeling industry?

Be a roadie for the Eagles

13. How many years have you been a member of the Remodelers Council?

I guess I have been going to Remodeler’s lunches since around 2000. I got involved in the Tour around 2003 and then was conned into being the chairman in 2010 and 2011. I still owe Carrie and Amy Kimberly

14. Why membership in the Remodelers Council is important to you?

I have always enjoyed the interaction between the remodelers and the associates. They listen to our pitches, examine our new products and use us as a trusted resource. We like the camaraderie that is a part of the council.
